Winning a Major championship requires a certain degree of focus and mental toughness that some players simply lack. Steve Eubanks believes Rory has that mental toughness. During a week where most players were complaining about fescue and course conditions, Rory was one of the few to acknowledge that this is the US Open. It's supposed to be hard.

“He's entering it with a mindset that I like. He's got a great attitude about it. And in a US Open setting that's what it takes.” - Steve Eubanks on Rory McIlroy ____________________________________________________________________________

Erin Hills is not a familiar course to a majority of the players in the field this week. The course boasts 138 bunkers that will prove to be truely hazardous for players who miss the fairway and the potentially bad weather is sure to bring them into play. Jeff Babineau identifies the final 6 holes as a window of opportunity where birdies can be made if weather permits.

“You feel like you're at the British Open” - Jeff Babineau on the atmosphere of Erin Hills

After several blunders over the past few years, the USGA is under pressure to ensure that this year's US Open goes off without a hitch. While rules officials will be scattered across every hole at Erin Hills, the USGA is relatively helpless against the potentially inclement weather that threatens the area. Gary VanSickle reports that the US Open likes to air on the side of caution when it comes to weather, which may partially explain their decision to cut back the controversial fescue lining the fairways.

On the positive side, players may have an advantage on the greens which should make for some dramatic play over the weekend.

"“It’s hard to see the greens getting firm and fast with this weather.” - Gary VanSickle
